Designed for the Maharashtra Cricket Association, the 59,000-seater cricket ground occupies a spectacular site high up on the Deccan Plateau alongside the Pune-Mumbai Expressway.
Faced with a site that sloped 15m from north to south, the design rebalanced the levels to create a deep bowl of terraced seating around a 15-pitch playing surface. This lower terrace, accessed by a wide pedestrian perimeter concourse, is the base for four upper stands with additional seating, positioned with gaps to give views out to the surrounding landscape for players and spectators alike. The upper levels include a Members’ Pavilion at the northern end and a Media stand to the south.
Built in steel and concrete, the stands have a complex braced structure to withstand the seismic conditions of this part of India. As well as providing shading and enabling good airflow, the stands’ distinctive lightweight steel and tensile membrane roof structure provides a memorable identity for the stadium.
Now known as the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, the ground is the home for the MCA and Indian Premier League team Pune Warriors India, and is also a venue for international cricket matches.
