The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai  has been the stage for some of cricket’s most memorable moments. Since the 1970s, the unique “swing” generated by the incoming sea breeze had diminished, altering the ground’s distinctive character.  Hopkins Architects were commissioned by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to address this, while increasing capacity, adding corporate boxes and air-conditioned facilities, and improving spectator comfort.

Set within a tight urban site just two streets from the Bay of Bengal, the redevelopment introduces twelve upper stands atop a continuous lower bowl of terracing. The design restores the sea breeze by allowing it to pass through the horizontal gap between the terrace and the stands, and through the vertical breaks between each stand, flowing across the pitch. On the western side, stands are scaled down to enhance airflow from the east further.

Given Chennai’s extreme heat, reaching up to 45°C, extensive translucent fabric roofs shade the seating while maintaining lightness and openness. A wide range of facilities, including sports courts, swimming pools, and two social clubs, alongside a cricket academy and car parking are also incorporated.

The result is a stadium that blends tradition with performance celebrating cricket’s heritage at Chepauk while transforming it into a modern, climate-responsive venue.
