The Alnwick Garden Pavilion and Visitor Centre was conceived as both a reinterpretation of a Victorian walled-garden greenhouse and a theatre foyer, guiding the many visitors who come to Alnwick Castle and its restored 12-acre garden. 

Drawing on the British landscape tradition, the building carefully choreographs framed views and sequences. Arrival begins in the car park, which opens wide vistas across Capability Brown’s historic landscape and the Aln valley. The pavilion itself  straddles the garden wall with two distinct functions: a public visitor centre to the north and garden-focused spaces to the south.

The visitor centre incorporates classrooms, café, shop, and educational facilities around a courtyard that highlights the historic wall. Crossing through, visitors reach a terrace aligned with Wirtz-designed water cascades, flanked by a restaurant and function room.

A unifying larch structural lattice shelters both indoor and outdoor spaces, cloaked in ETFE/PTFE cushions with varying opacity. Together, these interventions strike a balance between contemporary character and the garden’s ornamental richness.
