Wonderful to see people strolling around our thematic districts now that Expo 2020 is open October 2, 2021
Our ‘Thematic Districts’ creates a new piece of city which houses over 87 new permanent buildings and hosts the work of more than 136 participating countries in this year’s covid-delayed exhibition.
The project responds to context, culture and climate. Three petal-shaped districts representing Mobility, Opportunity and Sustainability sit at the heart of the Expo masterplan. Geometry, colour and landscape have been used to give each of the three districts a distinct character and each is anchored by a thematic pavilion.
Our concept is a modern take on a traditional Arab city, with a series of human-scaled, tree lined streets which efficiently deliver people to key events and pavilions, but also create a pleasant landscape conducive to relaxed wandering and discovery. These walkable, car-free districts are full of the sound of birdsong and trickling water, and offer a calm place to relax and catch your breath between pavilions. The shading structures create lovely dappled patterns of light on the streets and provide welcome relief from the 43 degree heat.
Great to see them finally coming to life.
