New World Records in Velodrome February 20, 2012

The London 2012 Velodrome opened to the public at the weekend to host the 2012 UCI World Cup.  The 6,000 seat venue was especially designed to generate an intimate and lively atmosphere to encourage the athletes:

Chris Hoy, who won two gold and one bronze medal during the event, said "I don't think there's been a track anywhere I've raced on in the world that had that kind of public support. To ride with that wall of noise behind you is just incredible ...  I believe I hit 78.1 kilometres an hour and that's the highest I've ever hit in a Keirin. You can't ask for more than that"

Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish set a new World Record of 32.754 seconds in the Team Sprint whilst the British Women also set a new team pursuit World Record. Meanwhile in the Men's Team Pursuit Australia clocked a new Australian record of 3min 54.615sec to claim the gold.
