A design competition project for a new Ice Rink

In May 2003 Hopkins Architects took part in a competition to design a new Ice Rink in Dresden.   We developed an elegant and cost-effective building by designing a simple, light shell using minimal materials and surfaces. The building consists of an upper level and three main halls, covered by a graceful curving roof allowing an abundance of natural light into the building.  The load-bearing roof is constructed of timber and insulated foil cushions.  Each hall is made accessible via a common foyer.

Situated in a clearing and partially enclosed by trees, the building is surrounded by mounded earth, formed from the excavation of the property to create façades and sits within view of the nearby river.

Sustainability was central to the design and included maximum use of natural ventilation; the creation of a test-station to monitor site contamination, reduce dumping of material and the re-use of residual material; an efficient organisation of the floor plan reducing the outside surface of the building and heating and cooling loads reduced through the use of the lowered basement.
