Herne Hill Velodrome
London
Details
Profile
Hopkins Architects have been approached to help regenerate this historic Velodrome, one of the oldest cycling tracks in the world and the site of the track cycling events for the 1948 London Summer Olympics. Once the pride of the cycling community in the country, the Velodrome has fallen into disrepair and needs immediate action to secure its long-term future and re-establish it as one of the centres of the cycling world in the city.
The project seeks to open up and demystify the world of track cycling to the greater community through the incorporation of new facilities and a welcoming, transparent design. It will also allow the Velodrome to function in parallel with the main London 2012 Velodrome (which Hopkins also designed). The centrepiece of the scheme will be the construction of a new pavilion to replace the existing derelict structure that will include changing facilities and a gym as well as a possible new café featuring views over the entire track.
A new family cycle circuit will surround the entire site and integrate with the new pavilion and new visitors facilities will help make it an attractive destination for community members.
