David Mellor Design Museum and Café

The David Mellor Design Museum at Hathersage in the Peak District National Park, has been built to display David Mellor's historic design collection together with a welcoming cafe for the many visitors to the site.

The Hathersage site has developed over a number of years as a home and place of work for the Mellor family. It includes the Round Building Cutlery Factory, also designed by Hopkins Architects, as well as offices, studio and a shop.

The new building is located between the shop and the company office, providing an internal link between the two. The structure of the building is made up a series of steel and pitch pine columns and bowstring roof trusses, acting compositely and enclosing the space. At the rear of the building, the structure is infilled with exhibition cabinets and, at the front, a series of full height sliding glazed doors.

The Design Museum will help to reinvigorate local Sheffield traditions of cutlery making, forming a visible link between modern design history and present-day production.
