The River Don Masterplan, Sheffield December 22, 2008

A resolution to grant planning permission was passed this week for Hopkins Architects vision of a new sustainable community in the River Don Valley.

Set in the outskirts of Sheffield, our masterplan for developer British Land is a framework for regeneration of the River Don district, which has suffered a down-turn in industry, lack of investment, and a proliferation of anonymous retail/leisure parks.  The vision of a new sustainable business and residential community will be formed around a neighbourhood hub with public spaces and streets uniting disparate and irregular plots into a cohesive masterplan, extending links into the surrounding area and increasing permeability. Buildings will be of a scale, density and massing to hold their own amidst the massive scale of the Forgemasters factory and Meadowhall Shopping Centre. A new urban character will be created, set against a landscaped and green riverside park.
